Waterside Karori beat Island Bay 2-0 at Wakefield Park today to take outright second place with two games in hand on Iskand Bay and Miramar who sit in third equal. Unfortunately Tawa made light work of Upper Hutt, winning 5-0, and with two games to play against Lower Hutt and Kapiti are odds on to win the Capital Premier league.
In the game at Wakefield Park the first half was a tight even contest with the best chance of the half coming early in the game as James Potter forced a good save out of the Island Bay keeper.
At halftime the message was to try and get the ball in behind the Island Bay back four through quick transition as they were leaving lost of space between back four and goalkeepe, playing very flatly. In the windy conditions and with a bobbly service it proved difficult to achieve, and when we did get in behind the bounce of the ball off the surface made it difficult to get the ball down.
In the 55th minute the deadlock was broken from a corner with Adam Crump competing with the Sharks keeper and nodding the ball down for James Hill to tap in. A typically hot headed and one eyed Island Bay bench were up in arms believing the keeper to have been fouled but from the sideline the competition for the ball looked fair.
Midway through the second half the game was marred by an ugly incident. I only saw an Isalnd Bay player chasing Adam Crump around the park throwing wild haymakers and Adam Crump doing his best Ali impersenation, bobbing and weaving to miss the punches. After consultation between linesman and referee it became obvious that Crump was not an innocent party and was red carded for use of the elbow. The Island Bay player was also dismissed leaving both teams with ten men.
Isalnd Bay threw everything at us in the last 15 minutes without forcing a save from Fulch in goal and we always looked dangerous on the counter. With time nearly up Kevin Hoskin found himself one on one with the Island Bay goalkeeper who made a good save. From the resulting corner Kevin volleyed home to seal a good two nil victory. |
