Season Wrap-Up

Season Wrap-Up

With another footy season behind us, it's time to look back on some of the team and individual achievements at the club over the past few months. The men's first team enjoyed a good season in the Capital Premier League, finishing second behind Tawa, while also having a very good run in the Chatham Cup, eventually being knocked out in the Fourth Round by the finalists Olympic. The team will probably rue dropping points in a couple of games they were in a good position to win and which may have been enough to grab the top spot in the league, but overall it was a good season.

The women's first team also had a successful season, finishing second in the Premier League, and winning the Kelly Cup, the oldest women's competition in the capital. They also won the pre-season tournament, and had a decent run in the NZ Women's Knock-Out Cup, having every right to look back on this season with some pride.

Other teams at the club also had successful seasons. The Sealords did the Capital 6 double, winning both the League and the Cup, and Sealads and Kittenz also won their leagues (Capital 15 and 16 respectively). The Tonners won the Capital 12 Cup, and also won promotion by finishing second in the League. Magpies and Stevedores also secured promotion from Capital 7 and 15 respectively by finishing second in their leagues. The Sealords won the Team of the Year award at the prizegiving for winning the double, while the first women's team won the Most Consistent Team award for their successful season.

In terms of individual performances, the men's first team player of the season was Michael McKinley for his sterling defensive work, while goalkeeper Mark Fulcher was the players' player of the year. The player of the season for the first women's team was the captain Renee Leota, who also won the club's Golden Boot award scoring 25 goals in 17 League and Cup games. Renee has also been selected for the New Zealand U-20 women's team, so well done to her. Sportsperson of the Year award went to Anthony Buick-Constable from the Dreamers.

The club also recognised a number of individuals who had helped to keep things ticking along during the season. Evald Subasic won the Supporter of the Year award, while the efforts of Club Captain Mike Greene and Brodie Wilson were recognised with both of them sharing the Club Person of the Year award.

Thanks to everyone for choosing to play for the Wharfies this past season, and we look forward to seeing you all again next year!
